The FINAL EXAM will be on Jan 14, 2008, Monday, at 16:30 in

the MATHEMATICS building M - 04---M-07, M-102---M-104, M-13,

* These are the correct places. There was M-101 before , M-101 is not a classroom.

THE FINAL EXAM COVERS all the topics covered during the semester, that is from the beginning of the book to the end of 6.3 and also the first three pages of 7.4.

The results of the Exam 2 are here there has been many changes due to Q1 and Q2 we regraded them.

This course has two sections both are taught by Semra Kaptanoğlu (M 138) , there are two assistants, Duygu Aruğaslan (M 45) , and Cemil Büyükadalı (M 41).

We all have office hours as listed in the schedule below. We encourage you to use them.

You can go to anyone of the hours.

Exam dates :

EXAM 1: October 26, Friday , 17:40

EXAM 2: November 30, Friday, 17:40

About half of the Exam questions will be choosen from the exercises of the book.

It is to your advantage to do the exercises. If you are not sure bring your solution to discuss it with one of us during the office hours given.

By now you should have done the exercises of the sections 1.1, 1.2, 13. of the textbook (its name and author is given in the Useful information section below)).

Useful information:

The main goal of this course is to enable the student to comprehend and construct mathematical arguments, as well as to develop the student's mathematical maturity by providing basic definitions, facts and tools necessary.

If you do well in this course, then it is very likely that you will have no trouble in the rest of

your education in the mathematics courses. How much you learn is up to you to some degree. You can learn alot or just learn as little as necessary to pass the course.

It is to your advantage to learn how to write mathematics as early as possible.

The exams are never in the form of multiple choice exams in the mathematics department. Thus, presenting your solutions/argument is/are in an unambigious way is very important. Many students loose points in the exams because of not writing what they really want to.

You should pay attention to the writing as much as the correctness of your arguments.

Textbook : Proofs and Fundamentals by Ethan D. Bloch

  The reserve section of the library has several copies.

The photocopy room of the library has copies you can buy, ask for the book of Math 111.

Advice for succes in the course: You should study regularly starting from the first day. If you do this you will not need to study for the exams. It is a very bad strategy to skip classes to study for the nearest exam! If you come to the class a little prepared you will learn much more, and if you do a little after study you will know what you have learned and what remains unclear . Then you can go to your instructor with a clear question. Therefore I suggest everyone who is planning to be succesful in this course to STUDY REGULARLY.

Before coming to the class : Read the relevant part of the book before coming to class, especially the new definitions. This will give you a chance to ask questions in class.

After the class : Do the excercises of the textbook of the section covered in class to see if you really understood the material.
