Info for New Students

INFORMATION FOR NEW STUDENTS

Registration. You can register, add and drop courses at the following web site.

http://oibs.metu.edu.tr

To register you need a user code and password (they can be obtained from the Computer Centre). The code for the Math Department is 236. For example, to register for the MATH 501 course, you have to type 2360501. Do not forget to see your advisor for approval after registration and add-drop.

Add-Drop: This takes place during the second week of the semester. After following the lectures, you may drop some courses you were already registered for or add new courses. Even if you do not make any changes during the add-drop period, see your advisor during this period.

First meetings. The schedule of a graduate course is determined by the students and the lecturer. For that purpose, the lecturer announces a time and place for a first meeting. Look out for the announcements on the graduate board (at the entrance to the secretaries’ office) during the registration period.

Non-credit courses. Math 591 or 592 Seminar Course, Math 506 Comprehensive Studies (Preliminary Exam), Math 600 (Section xx) and Math 9xx are compulsory non-credit courses.

Financial support. Department employs assistants, the selection is based on the student’s academical history and performance in the written assitanstship exam and the following interview. Becoming an assistant through ÖYP and TÜBITAK Doctoral scholarships are other financial options.

Computers and internet. You can use the Student Computer Lab (M-202) unless there is a lecture. The user code and the password you were given at the Computer Centre give you access to a computer account. To reach your account, either visit http://webmail.metu.edu.tr or do telnet to orca.cc.metu.edu.tr. Note that when you graduate, the account will be cancelled.

Library. It is located opposite the Math Department. You can check out books with your student ID card. Math books are on the 2nd floor and recent periodicals are on the 1st floor. You can search the library collection at the computers located all around in the library or at: http://library.metu.edu.tr/virtua/english/

E-mail lists. Your metu account mentioned above will be added to the departmental and graduate student e-mail lists after the add-drops. If you do not receive these e-mails for some reason, then send an e-mail to subscribe@arf.math.metu.edu.tr. Via the departmental list (math@arf.math.metu.edu.tr) you will be able to get all the announcements regarding on-going mathematical events, seminars, conferences etc. The graduate student list (graduates@arf.math.metu.edu.tr) is open only to the department’s graduate students, that is there is no faculty on the list, hence you can freely discuss your problems with your fellow students on this list. There is also an e-mail list for mathematicians in Turkey. By subscribing to this list you can get announcements for most of the mathematical events taking place in Turkey. To subscribe send an e-mail to listproc@bilkent.edu.tr with no subject and sub turkmath [your name] in the body of the message.

Seminars. Attending seminars is an excellent way to broaden your mathematical background and hence to facilitate the decision procedure for doctoral studies. The Department's general seminars take place on Thursdays at 15:40; also weekly group seminars are carried out on specialized topics.

Questions. See Güldane Gümüþ (Secretaries Office) or a member of the Graduate Committee if you have any questions or need advice.
