In the year 1931 an important theorem was proved which allowed
to determine all possible division algebras over a number field.The
authors were Richard Brauer, Helmut Hasse and Emmy Noether.
In the colloquium lecture I intend to talk about the following
topics :
1. The mathematical content of this theorem its proof and its
consequences.
2. The history of ideas and preliminary steps towards the
proof,based on personal letters which were exchanged between the three
authors.
3. How this theorem had been accepted by the mathematical
public of the time.
