Department Overview

METU Mathematics plays an essential role in the education and research of mathematics in Turkey. With 40 regular faculty and more than 40 research assistants, METU Mathematics Deparetment is one of the most active departments, with research subjects including
  • Complex Analysis and Linear Topological Spaces,
  • Operator Theory,
  • Theory of Groups and Rings,
  • Topology of Manifolds,
  • Geometry,
  • Differential equations and dynamical systems,
  • Numerical Analysis and Applications to Engineering.
The depertment organizes and supports many conferences and seminars throughout the year. During summer, undergraduate and graduate summer schools are organized, the latter uniting graduate students from various universities around Turkey.

DEGREES OFFERED. Mathematics Department offers BS., MS. and PhD. degrees in mathematics. Currently there are 440 undergraduate (84 in prep class, 101 first year, 74, second year, 83 third year, 98 fourth year), 70 graduate students registered to the department (See also Department profile by numbers). Moreover, in view of increasing importance of mathematics in many fields of research and technology, the department also offers a double major program to students from other departments which enable them to obtain a BS. degree in mathematics in addition to the degree offered by their own departments.

One of the main objectives in the undergraduate program is to offer a well balanced education in mathematics. This is achieved by giving core courses and flexibility is provided by a large number of elective courses - both departmental and non-departmental. (See the details at courses).
