MAPLE 8  - Complete Mathematics and Visualization System
MAPLE 8 is a powerful mathematical problem-solving and visualization system used world-wide in education, research and industry. Its principle strength is its symbolic problem solving algorythms. Unlike conventional math software, which can only work with floating-point numbers, Maple 8 can solve problems involving formal mathematical definitions and return answers as mathematical objects. You can run Maple 8 on narwhal, rorqual, orca, and beluga. The software needs X-Windows environment (to install this software, look
at details in (*)

In order to use Mapple 8,  Windows 98/2000 user should

1) Run  "Xsession"  from Start/Programs/X-Winpro v4.2/Xsession

2) log on (connect)  beluga.cc.metu.edu.tr or orca.cc.metu.edu.tr with
his/her metu account via telnet/ ssh

3)  type the following command

 export DISPLAY=ipaddress:0.

(Note that Win 98 user can determine ipaddress from Start/Run/ by typing winipcfg command. Win 2000 user can get ipaddress from Start/Run/ by typing command and then ipconfig).

For example ipaddress is of the form 144.122.136.41)

4) start a Maple 8 session by entering the following command;

xmaple

Manuals for the software are available in CC-Library (CC Room No:109)
( it can be reserved via http://cclibrary.metu.edu.tr )

(*)  For X-Windows Environment, first one should follow the below steps

1) Installation of XWinPro

a)  Source of Programs is available on TORE

(\\tore\Utilities\Xwindows\XWinPro32)

b)  Run xwp32-42.exe , but in the first WinZip
Self-Extractor dialog screen, remember to disable "When Done Unzipping
Run: SETUP.EXE" option.

c) Run/extract this license32bit4.2.exe to the same directory where you just stored X-WinPro's installation files (default is c:\xinstall).

d) License.exe file includes the files disk1.id and xwpdllid.dll. When you extract license.exe to X-WinPro's installation directory, you have to replace the existing disk1.id and xwpdllid.dll with files which come with license.exe

e)  Install X-WinPro (run c:\xinstall\setup.exe)

Note :  1) In our computer lab's  computers you can find  X-WinPro software and use xmaple with following 4 steps described above.

            2) One can reach the information about other METU licensed software available on beluga, orca via the following url
