      In this dissertation an integration free algorithm is developed to determine the smallest eigenvalue of a self-adjoint, 

semi-bounded, second order linear elliptic partial differential operators. The method is mainly based on the concept of 

space pruning. The shape of the domain has an important role in the development of the algorithm.In this work, a rectangular

domain is used. Finally, some test problems are solved using this method and satisfactory results are obtained.
