Abstract: Under the assumption that a simple group with a standard subgroup A such that A \ Z(A)  is 

isomorphic to PSL(3,4) is known, a result which by now seems to be established a characterization of 

the sporadic simple group He of order 2²⁰ 3³5²7³17 discovered by Held in terms of the centralizer of an 

element of order 3 contained in the center ofa Sylow 3-subgroup of He is given.
